Coconut Grove's Yearlong Restaurant Countdown Just Ran Out

Coconut Grove's Yearlong Restaurant Countdown Just Ran Out

For most of 2026, every food write-up about Coconut Grove read like a countdown clock. A steakhouse was "targeting" a date. An Italian spot was "set to open." A pizza shop was "preparing" an expansion. If you live in the Grove and actually wanted dinner, none of that told you where to go on a Tuesday.

That countdown finally hit zero this month. La Sponda, the coastal Italian restaurant that had been described as coming "sometime in 2026" since at least last summer, opened its doors at Vita at Grove Isle on September 19. It is a 120-seat room designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, built with materials sourced almost entirely from Italy, and lit in part by lamps painted with the neighborhood's own peacocks. Chef Danny Ganem is running fresh pasta made in-house daily alongside dishes like Spaghetti alla Chitarra al Tartufo and a Wagyu Bistecca Fiorentina, backed by a wine list built around Barolo, Barbaresco, and Puglia bottlings that trace back to owner Thomas Angelo's own family history there.

That single opening closes out a year of promises, but it also reveals something the running list of "coming soon" posts never quite captured: the restaurants that got the most advance hype were not the ones that opened fastest. The quietest opening beat all of them by almost a year, and the loudest name on the list, a national chain with a confirmed address, still is not open.

The Timeline Nobody Promised You

Line up what was actually said about each project against what happened, and the order looks nothing like the order of the press releases.

Where What was said What actually happened
3190 (Main Highway) No advance announcement Opened quietly, reported in November 2025
Grand Public Kitchen + Bar (CocoWalk) Announced for early 2026 Opened on schedule, May 2026
1986 Steakhouse (Mayfair) Originally targeted fall 2025 Delayed by construction, opened by May 2026
Miami Slice (McFarlane Road) "Preparing to open," as of March 2026 Open and serving as of this month
La Sponda (Vita at Grove Isle) "Opening 2026," no month specified, through most of the year Opened September 19, 2026
Chick-fil-A (South Dixie Highway) Expected sometime in 2026 Still not open, now pointing to early 2027

The pattern is almost backward from what the coverage implied. The restaurant with zero fanfare landed first. The one with the most design press, the Michelin-adjacent pedigree, and a year of "opening 2026" headlines landed last, or closest to last, with only the Chick-fil-A still pending.

The One That Opened With No Fanfare

Before any of the bigger names had a lease signed, a restaurant called 3190 opened at 3190 Main Highway, wedged into the narrow space between Lokal and Atchana's Homegrown Thai. The name is the address. There is no menu to browse because the format is fixed: one dish, one room, no choices to make once you sit down. It opened in late 2025 without the renderings and design credits that followed every other project on this list, and it has been serving that single format for close to a year now while the rest of the neighborhood's dining map was still being described in future tense.

The Long Wait at the Corner Unit

1986 Steakhouse had the opposite path. Construction on the Argentine parrilla concept in the Mayfair's corner unit, across from Carbone Vino, was underway by the summer of 2025, with an original fall 2025 timeline that slipped as the build-out continued. It finally opened by May 2026, serving live-fire asado alongside Japanese A5 Wagyu from Shimane Prefecture, Kobe beef, and a cocktail program built by Buenos Aires import 3 Monos Bar.

The reviews since opening have been mixed in the way early runs at ambitious rooms often are. OpenTable shows a 4.7 average from 18 diners, with praise for the atmosphere and service, but at least one detailed diner account describes a $36 foie gras appetizer that arrived as a thin sliver and a martini that came back barely chilled after being ordered ice cold. None of that erases a strong opening or a real concept. It does mean a corner unit with this much design and menu ambition is still working out its early kinks nearly six months after the doors opened, which is worth knowing before you build a special occasion around it.

The Sunday That Used to Require a Bridge Crossing

Not every change in the Grove this year has been about what's cooking. Every Sunday, the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden courtyard turns into the Grove Bazaar, a market that started a little over a year ago and now draws more than 40 vendors selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade jewelry, running 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission. The lineup rotates through names like Mann, the Miami women's clothing brand, vintage shop Left on Saturn, and Hallandale's Mintage Records.

The market is built around brunch at Mayfair Grill, run by chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, who spent more than a decade in the Grove after launching Glass & Vine before taking over the Mayfair's kitchen. "Just take it all in, really look around," is how one organizer has described the pitch to first-time visitors, pointing to the way the garden setting, the art, and the architecture come together in one courtyard. It is a market and a brunch and a walk through one of the neighborhood's older buildings, all in the same three-hour window, on the same block, every week.

What's Still Not Open

The one project on this list still waiting is also the one with the least local mystery attached to it. Chick-fil-A confirmed its first Coconut Grove location at 3510 South Dixie Highway, a spot that will be the closest one to the University of Miami campus, with an opening window that has moved from "sometime in 2026" to early 2027. It is the one entry on this year's list that has not yet opened, and its timeline is still open-ended.

Put the whole year side by side and the lesson is not about any single restaurant. It is that a countdown clock tells you what someone hopes will happen, not what will. The smallest, least-covered opening on Main Highway beat every other project on this list to the punch by the better part of a year, and the one everyone had circled on a calendar since last summer only opened this week.
