The Marathon Calendar That Isn't on the Tourism Site

If you live between Mile Marker 47 and 63, the dates that actually reorganize your week from late July through October aren't printed on any welcome brochure. They're fishery dates. Mini-season ended on July 30. Regular spiny lobster season opened August 6. Stone crab claws come back to the dock on October 15. Every restaurant menu, every Sunday plan, and every boat ramp line in Marathon quietly rearranges itself around those three markers, and the residents who read the calendar right eat better and spend less time waiting for a table.

This is not a tourist listicle. It's what to actually do with the next ten weeks if you already live here.

Three dates that run the town

The regulatory frame is straightforward, and it's worth having it in one place because the local rules diverge from the rest of Florida in ways that matter if you're diving off your own seawall.

The 2026 lobster sport season takes place July 29 through July 30, 2026, and the regular lobster season begins Aug. 6, 2026 and ends March 31, 2027. Daily limits in the Florida Keys and Biscayne National Park differ from those in other parts of Florida at six per-person, per-day. In Marathon, the shoreline dive rule applies only during the two-day mini season, while Key Colony Beach extends it four days before mini season through 10 days after regular season opens, and unincorporated Monroe County and Key West apply it three days before mini season, all of mini season, and the first five days of regular season.

The practical read: once August 6 hits, the crowding thins fast, the six-per-day limit is the same all winter, and your neighbors in Key Colony Beach are still living under a stricter shoreline rule than you are.

What August 6 actually changes at the dock

The regular opener is a quieter day than mini-season, and that's the point. The regular season opens August 6, 2026 at 12:01 AM and runs through March 31, 2027, far less crowded than mini season and offering eight months of lobstering.

If you're not diving yourself, watch where the boats tie up. During stone crab season, mid-October through mid-May, Keys Fisheries is one of the best places in South Florida to get stone crab claws, cracked and served fresh straight off the boats that dock at the marina. The upstairs raw bar there, Clawsablanca, is adults-only and runs a nightly sunset rum punch toast that locals tend to time to about forty minutes before the horizon goes orange.

For a west-facing dinner during the shoulder weeks between August 6 and October 15, the useful shortlist is Hurricane Grille at Blackfin Resort, Island Fish Company at MM 54 bayside, and Mahina inside Isla Bella. Reserve Mahina. Walk into Island Fish.

Lalo's is the new variable

The most consequential change to Marathon dining in the last year is not a menu tweak at a legacy spot. It's Lalo's, which ribbon-cut on January 21, 2026 after a soft-open runway. The Middle Keys dining scene welcomed a new addition as Lalo's bar and restaurant celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting on Jan. 21, though the doors had been open for a few months to allow the team to find its rhythm. Owners Eduardo Sanchez and Yerima Yera run the room with head chef Giovanni Cardona.

The relevant detail for residents is not the martini-glass presentations. It's the happy hour. The bar serves $8 signature cocktails including Lalo's rum punch, mojitos and margaritas alongside a $7 food menu featuring crab salad towers and spicy tuna rolls, with happy hour from 2 to 6 p.m. Find it at 11399 Overseas Highway. Two-to-six is the window when the room breathes and you can actually sit at the sushi bar without waiting.

Why the price of your stone crab claw is a live news story

There's a piece of local business news you should carry into the fall that changes how the October 15 opener reads. In late 2025, civil suits filed by Keys fishermen accused several Marathon-based wholesalers of coordinating dockside prices going back years.

The suits allege that conspirators began meeting at least as early as June 2017 to set initial prices per pound before the opening of lobster and stone crab seasons, and that defendants would then coordinate throughout the season to adjust prices in lockstep.

Existing civil suits are expected to be combined into a larger class action throughout 2026, with additional parties signing on. Prices for spiny lobster in particular are critical in the early stage of a season that runs from August through March, as more than 50% of the annual harvest occurs during the front-loaded months of August and September.

That last number is the one to hold onto. Half the year's catch lands in the first eight weeks of the eight-month season. When you see a spiny lobster special at any Marathon restaurant in August or September, it is not a marketing choice. It is arithmetic.

The weekend anchors that don't change

Some places don't shift with the calendar, and part of living here is knowing which ones deserve a standing reservation and which reward walk-ins.

Sunset Grille sits at the foot of the 7 Mile Bridge and runs the longest continuously operating pool-and-beach day in the Keys. The Sunday Funday party includes a poolside DJ, food and drink specials, cornhole tournaments, music, and a beach BBQ. It's less a bar night and more a standing weekly appointment for locals who don't want to plan.

For breakfast, the Stuffed Pig closes Tuesday and Wednesday and opens 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the rest of the week, noon on Sundays. Arrive when they unlock the door or don't bother on a weekend. The Blackfin Resort dining guide, which locals cross-reference for hours, puts it plainly: The Stuffed Pig and 7 Mile Grill can have long waits on weekends, and the shortest wait is right at opening.

Butterfly Café at Tranquility Bay is the sleeper reservation. It has been featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives for its unique menu and active involvement in eradication of the invasive lionfish species, and manatees can be viewed from the dock daily. If you're taking a mainland friend to dinner and want them to leave impressed without pretending you spent money, this is the play.

What's coming after October 15

Once stone crab opens, the fall race and festival calendar takes over the weekends. None of the marquee runs happen inside Marathon proper this fall, which is worth planning around if you have friends who train.

The Old Highway Run is a 5K in Tavernier on October 3, 2026. The Southernmost Half Marathon and 10K runs on October 11 in Key West, starting and finishing at Higgs Beach. The Islamorada Half Marathon weekend is December 12–13. Since 1982, the 7 Mile Bridge Run has been one of the most iconic events in Florida, with runners crossing one of the longest bridges in the world surrounded by turquoise water, and though it's only 7 miles, spots sell out in minutes. The tentative 2026 date is April 11. If you want a bib, set a calendar reminder now for registration open, not race day.

Then in spring, the whole town flips. The Marathon Seafood Festival is the second-largest Florida Keys event with more than 15,000 attendees, and the 2027 edition runs March 13–14. More than 2,000 pounds of local spiny lobster are expected to be served. That's about eight full mini-season bag limits on one plate table.

The town's rhythm from August through October is not slow season. It's the working half of the fishery calendar, which means dockside prices are moving, wholesalers are being sued over how those prices got set, and the best plates in Marathon are quietly cheaper and less crowded than they will be in February.
